Overview
Arena is all about timing. Payout for arena is at 5 (o.r 6 if DST) local time for wherever you first set up your account. You ideally want to do all your climbing in Arena as close to payout as possible to maximize your rank at payout. This strategy is possible only if you are willing to spend roughly the last hour or so before payout in game. You will be holding attacks to max time, attacking only the furthest you can reach, and hopefully sling-shotting* if you get lucky.
When to start
You get 5 attacks (unless you want to spend cores) and a cool-down of 15 minutes between attacks so you will need approximately an hour and 6 minutes to do all your attacks (more on this later). My current payout time is 5:00 PM local time so I start my attack around 3:50 PM. This gives me a bit of cushion to pick my opponents and not mess up timing. So start about 1 hour 10 minutes before payout.
1. Refresh opponents
The most important thing to remember when climbing is that you need to win to climb and you have limited attacks. So, utilize the refresh button about 1 minute before you want to attack. Find the opponent you know you will beat and that is the highest rank possible. The right-most opponent will always be the best rank so ideally you attack them, but if you can't beat them it is better to attack someone easier than to lose. Refreshing also lets you know if you can get a higher rank opponent than first appears. Typically after 5-6 refreshes you will see every possible opponent and can pick the one you want to attack.
Rotation
The rotation starts here. The following steps should be followed until you use 4/5 attacks.
2. Wait a Minute
Arena has some funky interactions that can make you jump ranks that you otherwise shouldn't be able to, this is called sling-shotting. How sling-shotting works is a bit of luck but you can maximize your chance for luck. How it works: When you choose someone to attack, lets say they are rank 12, and while you are attacking them they beat the person in rank 10. If you finish beating them after they already increased in rank you will still switch rank with them, but now you are switching with their more recent rank.
